A sculptural costume design for a contemporary ballet performance, resembling open mindedness

The ‘nine tailed fox’ or ‘Kitsune’ is a mythical creature and common motif in East Asian countries. The idea behind this creature is that the number of tails it has, ranging from one to nine, determines how wise it is.

I have asked the question what is wisdom? I believe a number of attributes all come together to create this term.

My aim for the project was to come up with nine attributes that I believe combine to create wisdom and to design and make nine sculptural tails that attach to the dancer. I didn’t necessarily want these to aesthetically resemble a fox’s tail, but to metaphorically represent the attributes.

The open mindedness tail resembles an opening flower and incorporates Japanese silk painting to relate to the fact that it is a Japanese myth.

Love

The Love tail also relates to Japanese culture through the use of basket weaving. Paper craft is also popular in Japan and is incorporated through the red paper flowers, also a common motif of love.

Discipline

Strong, straight lines resemble the rigidity of staying in line/ staying disciplined.

Knowledge

I used mathematical symbols as a generalisation of knowledge. They intertwine to resemble the jumble of knowledge inside the mind.

Passion

Passion incorporates flame-like shapes and bright colours to emphasise the excitement that comes along side passion. It moves more freely than other tails and flies and dances with the dancer, also resembling passion.

Patience

The patience tail takes the theme of a clock and incorporates intricate clock shapes and roman numerals.

Strength

I wanted strength to be made up of rigid shapes and points. It stays strong and rigid on the body when the dancer moves.

Respect

The idea behind the respect tail is that you should respect everything seen in the mirrored surface of the tail, that being yourself, others and everything around you.
