Travelling Theatre for Invisible Cities

Based on Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities', this project explores temporal venues that can house live performance, and the temporary nature of live performance itself. I wanted the travelling of my piece between venues to be part of the performance and experience for both actors and audience. I achieved this by designing a hybrid between wagon and stage contraption that could tour through each town or city prior to it being set up for the live performance. My designs for the moving stage were based on medieval pageant wagons because not only was it the same era as Marco Polo’s life, which the narrative was based on but it also allowed me to explore how a stage can be adapted for travel. Other influences for my work include the adaptability of travelling salesman from the past and the simple yet effective pulley mechanisms employed in Baroque theatre.
